Setup Oh My Zsh
Oh My Zsh is a delightful, open source, community-driven framework for managing your Zsh configuration. It comes bundled with thousands of helpful functions, helpers, plugins, themes, etc..
In my opinion this is the best shell to use in general but especially on your RPi home lab.
Install Zsh
Oh My Zsh requires Zsh be installed on the machine
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install zsh -y
Install Oh My Zsh
When prompted, enable zsh as default
sh -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh/master/tools/install.sh)"
OR
sh -c "$(wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh/master/tools/install.sh -O -)"
Personalize
As mentioned above, Zsh has many themes and plugins so you can personalize your experience.
You can also easily create aliases for repetitive commands!
- This is my biggest use-case
Plugins & Theme
You can set your theme and plugins in your ~/.zshrc
file
You'll notice that most of it is commented out.
The important lines to look at are lines 11, 73, and 103.
- Line 11 is where you specify your theme
- Line 73 is where the plugins you want are defined
- Line 103 is an optional unique prompt
# If you come from bash you might have to change your $PATH.
# export PATH=$HOME/bin:/usr/local/bin:$PATH
# Path to your oh-my-zsh installation.
export ZSH="$HOME/.oh-my-zsh"
# Set name of the theme to load --- if set to "random", it will
# load a random theme each time oh-my-zsh is loaded, in which case,
# to know which specific one was loaded, run: echo $RANDOM_THEME
# See https://github.com/ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh/wiki/Themes
ZSH_THEME="robbyrussell"
# Set list of themes to pick from when loading at random
# Setting this variable when ZSH_THEME=random will cause zsh to load
# a theme from this variable instead of looking in $ZSH/themes/
# If set to an empty array, this variable will have no effect.
# ZSH_THEME_RANDOM_CANDIDATES=( "robbyrussell" "agnoster" )
